Griffon Women Move to 12-1 With Monday Win Over Southern

Clarke's 20 points pace Western in 74-65 Win

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Missouri Western women's basketball team closed out a three-game homestand with a 74-65 win over Missouri Southern to remain undefeated inside the MWSU Fieldhouse on Monday.

The Griffons (12-1, 6-1 MIAA) put forth another balanced scoring attack, with four players in double figures. Connie Clarke paced Western with her second-straight 20-point effort (8-12 FG), pulling down 7 rebounds. Jordan Cunningham finished with 13 points and 4 assists. Brionna Budgetts added 12 points and 5 rebounds, and freshman Alyssa Bonilla had 10 points and 7 boards.  Senior Corbyn Cunningham added 7 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for the Griffons.

Southern (7-5, 4-3 MIAA) was paced by 6-3 sophomore center Madi Stokes, who led all scorers with 21 points and 11 rebounds, while freshman guard Lacy Stokes added 19 points and 6 steals for a young, talented Lions lineup.

The Griffons took a 10-8 lead at the 4:18 mark of the first quarter and never trailed the rest of the way.  The Lions never went away and kept pace, trailing 35-32 at the half.  A Bonilla 3-pointer early in the 4th quarter matched Western's largest lead of the game at 57-48, but Southern would pull to within 2 (63-61) on a jumper by Stokes with 2:40 remaining but the Griffons closed the game on an 11-4 run to secure the victory and move to a perfect 10-0 at home in the 2021-22 season.

Western (6-1 MIAA) has now won three straight and remains tied for second place in the conference, just behind Nebraska-Kearney at 6-0.

The Griffons hit the road on Thursday for their second of three games this week, when they travel to Emporia State (9-5, 4-4 MIAA). They close out the week Saturday at Washburn (5-7, 3-3 MIAA).
