Lacrosse holds off Lewis for first-ever GLVC win

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western lacrosse team earned its first-ever GLVC victory Sunday as they defeated Lewis, 15-13, inside Spratt Stadium.  MWSU improves to 3-6 this season and 1-2 in league play.

The Griffons trailed 4-3 at halftime and Lewis scored 32 second into the second half, but then Missouri Western found its offense.  MWSU scored six consecutive goals from four different players over the next nine minutes to build a 9-5 lead and they never gave the lead back.

Lewis did rally and tie the game twice in the second half as they used a 5-1 run to even the score 10-10 and the game was tied at 11 with 10:48 left before Madison Brady scored three straight Griffon goals to keep Missouri Western in front.  Brady scored four of the final five goals for MWSU as she ended with six on the afternoon.

Karlin York scored a career-high four goals for the Griffons, while Jorja Schooler added a career-high three and Madison Iandoli found the back of the net twice.  Mackenzie Porter earned her third win between the pipes as she finished with 11 saves.

Missouri Western was able to get one more ground ball than Lewis, 34-33, and they forced the Flyers into 23 turnovers.  Lewis did win the draw controls, 17-13, but the Griffons were able to clear 20 of their 24 attempts and the Flyers went just 14-of-23.

MWSU is on the road next weekend as they play at No. 2 Lindenwood Friday at 7:00 p.m. in St. Charles, Missouri.
