ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season as they fell to Alabama-Huntsville, 17-7, Sunday afternoon at Spratt Stadium. The Griffons fall to 1-1 this season, while the Chargers improve to 3-1.
UAH jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game before Missouri Western got on the board with a goal from
Madison Brady. The Chargers answered back with three straight before MWSU rallied back.
Alabama-Huntsville led 7-3 at halftime but the Griffons pulled to within two goals two different times early in the second half.
Jordan Shughrue scored back-to-back goals over a 1:09 span to get the lead down to 7-5. Then after another Charger goal,
Jorja Schooler found the back of the net off a pass from
Madison Iandoli to make it 8-6 with 22:19 left in the second half.
Brady added another goal with 19:53 to play to make it a 10-7 UAH lead, but the Chargers scored the final seven goals of the game to get the victory.
Missouri Western was outshot by Alabama-Hunstville 41-13, including 32-10 shots on goal. The Griffons had 23 turnovers to UAH's 11, while the two teams tied 13-13 in draw controls.
Mackenzie Porter was impressive in goal for MWSU as she made 15 saves on Sunday. Brady led the Griffons with three goals, Shughrue added two, and Iandoli and Schooler had the other two goals.
Missouri Western will wrap up its three-game homestand to start the season on Friday when they host Rockhurst at 6:00 p.m. inside Spratt Stadium.
