TOPEKA, Kan. – The Missouri Western women's basketball team had its three-game winning streak stopped Thursday as they lost at Washburn, 51-41. The Griffons fall to 6-12 this season and WU improves to 8-10.
The two teams went back-and-forth for most of the first quarter as Washburn led 16-13 after one, but then the Ichabods were able to get some separation from MWSU. Washburn scored the first eight points of the second quarter and built their lead to 13 points, 30-17, before Western scored the final four points of the half. The Griffs committed 13 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
Missouri Western scored the first four points of the second half to pull within five points, 30-25, but was as close as they got the rest of the way. Washburn made back-to-back three-pointers late in the third quarter and led 42-32 after three. The Ichabods led by as many as 15 points in the fourth quarter and MWSU wasn't able to make a run in the final period despite holding Washburn scoreless for the final 3:30 minutes.
The Griffons finished with 20 turnovers and they struggled to shoot the ball all night. They shot just 34.8% (16-46) from the field and made just 1-of-10 from the three-point line.
Asia McCoy led MWSU with 13 points and eight rebounds, while
Brionna Budgetts added nine points.
