ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – The Missouri Western men's basketball team closed out its five-game homestand with an 86-75 victory over Newman Tuesday inside the MWSU Fieldhouse. The Griffons have won two straight as they improve to 10-8 this season and the Jets fall to 2-16.
Newman jumped out to a quick 10-4 lead on Tuesday as MWSU made just one of its first six shots. The Griffons then used an 18-4 run to take their first lead and they never gave that lead back. Western led by as many as 12 points in the first before NU close the gap and MWSU led 40-35 at halftime.
The Griffons opened the second half on a 12-3 run to pull away from Newman as they led 52-38. The Jets got to within eight points, 60-52, with 11 minutes left in the game, but Missouri Western put the game away with a 16-3 run.
MWSU shot 50.0% (33-66) from the field for the second time this season and they made 13-of-25 three-point field goals as they shot better than 50% from three for the first time since February 29, 2020 against Washburn. The Griffons had 12 steals on Thursday and forced Newman into 20 turnovers.
Missouri Western had five in double figures for the second time this season.
Reese Glover scored 20 points as he went 6-of-9 from behind the arc. He also tied a career-high with three assists.
Tyrell Carroll added 19 points, six assists and four steals.
Will Eames scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while
Caleb Bennett and
Q Mays added 11 points each.
NOTABLES
Carroll moved into third place on the MWSU career assists list. He now has 350 as he passed David Washington to move into third place. Only Arthur Cook (473) and Wendell Humes (405) have more assists than Carroll.
