JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- #20 Missouri Western opened with smothering defense, holding Lincoln to 8.3 percent (1-12) shooting in the first quarter, and finished with solid offense -
Corbyn Cunningham (21 pts, 10 reb) and
Connie Clarke (14 pts, 12 reb) both had double-doubles - as the Griffons rolled to an 88-52 win over the Blue Tigers extending their unbeaten run to seven.
After winning the opening tip, Lincoln hit a three-pointer on its first possession, but that would be the only field goal allowed by Missouri Western in the first 10 minutes. The Griffons held Lincoln scoreless for the next five minutes, reeling off a 10-0 run and extending to a 19-9 first quarter lead.
Missouri Western kept up the pressure on both ends of the court through the second quarter en route to a 23-point halftime lead. The Griffons shot 64.3 percent (9-14) from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line in the second quarter, and forced 14 Blue Tiger turnovers in the first half.
The Griffons ran into a brief cold stretch after the break, but Cunningham helped MWSU hold Lincoln at bay with eight points in the quarter on 3-of-4 shooting then sparked a 14-0 run to open the fourth. Her pull-up jumper with 20 seconds elapsed in the final stanza jumpstarted the Griffon offense, and MWSU romped out to a 72-37 lead over the next two minutes.
Lincoln strung together a brief surge on either side of the media timeout, as Mercy Gonzalez had five points and and assist in a 10-0 spurt, but Missouri Western answered with a second-chance three-point play by Clarke, followed by a triple from
Jaelyn Haggard. The Griffon bench stretched the margin back to 36 points, with
Alyssa Bonilla knocking down a three-pointer and Jaden Schomp capping the scoring with a jumper with 14 seconds left.
Bonilla (14 pts), Haggard (13 pts) and
Brionna Budgetts (13 pts) also finished in double-digits for MWSU, and the Griffons outrebounded Lincoln 42-28 on the night. Kelsey Mitchell was the lone player for Lincoln in double figures, with 12 points.
Missouri Western returns to the MWSU Fieldhouse on Saturday, taking on Central Missouri. The Griffons look to extend to an 8-0 record in a 1:30 p.m. tip.
