Volleyball Sweeps Two at Gorilla Classic

Griffons move to 3-0 on the season

PITTSBURG, Kan. – Griffon Volleyball moved to 3-0 on the season with a pair of Friday sweeps at the Gorilla Classic.
 
MATCH 1
MWSU 3, East Central 0
Missouri Western hit .284 in the match and limited East Central to a -.090 hitting percentage, winning 25-23, 25-22 and 25-8. The Griffons totaled 50 pints to East Central's 29.
 
The Griffons had two 5-0 runs in the first set and got a kill by Allie Kerns and an ace from Lindsey Hartline out of a timeout to take the set. After a 4-0 ECU run late in the second tied the set at 22, the Griffons scored the final three to jump out to a 2-0 lead. The third was all Missouri Western with the Griffons jumping out to a 9-0 lead and also posting an 8-0 run and a 6-0 run to end the match.
 
Ali Tauchen tied for the team lead with nine kills, three aces, and led the team with three blocks. Sam Duncan added nine kills while Allie Kerns chipped in six. Lauren Murphy and Danielle Moje each had two blocks while Murphy also led the team with her 25 assists.
 
MATCH 2
MWSU 3, Western Colorado 0
The Griffs hit .297 in the second match of the day, getting double-digit kills from Tauchen (14), Maryssa Recio (11) and Duncan (11). Tauchen hit .423 in the match while Recio hit .375. Tiana Butler turned in a career-high 24 digs for the Griffons and Jessica Sachen had four kills.
 
After trailing most of the first set, the Griffons went on an 11-2 run to take a 22-17 lead then battled to win the first 25-21. Down 10-7 in the second, the Griffs closed out the set on an 18-3 run to go up 2-0 before slamming the door, 25-15 in the third.
