ST. JOSEPH – Missouri Western (19-21, 16-15 MIAA) took the field on Friday night looking to clinch a berth in the MIAA Championships, but could not overcome its slow start as the team fell to Central Missouri (33-12, 23-8 MIAA) by a score of 10-3.
Central Missouri entered Friday as the top team in the MIAA standings, and proved to be just that. The Mules jumped out to a six-run lead in the top of the first inning. However, the Griffons were inches away from getting out of the inning, as UCM's Erik Webb eluded the tag of
Dusty Stroup on a close-play at the third. Central Missouri would go on to pour in five more runs after the play.
Missouri Western would settle in over the next few innings. The Mules, however, still managed to outscore the Griffons 4-3 after the first inning.
