OKLAHOMA CITY – Missouri Western (11-13, 2-7 MIAA) lost to top-seeded and No. 7 Washburn (22-2, 9-0 MIAA) in the first round of the MIAA Championships on Friday morning. The Ichabods won the quarterfinal matchup 4-0 and will advance to the next round.
Washburn took the doubles point with wins on the two and three courts, both by margins of 6-1.
Joanna Abreu Roman and
Karolina Ström were in the midst of a back-and-forth match when the Ichabods clinched the doubles point. The Griffons' top doubles pair ended their match in a 4-3 deficit before the match was ruled unfinished.
The Griffons fell in the first three completed matches on the number five, three, and two courts. Washburn had not lost a single set in the dual before clinching the 4-0 first-round win.
Federica Salmaso came the closest to taking a set from the Ichabods. Salmaso was edged in the first set by way of a 7-5 tiebreaker.
The 2018-19 season comes to a close for Missouri Western after its loss on Friday. Missouri Western will finish the season with the most wins in the program since the 2014-15 season when the team went 11-10. The Griffons had their most successful run this season in the early spring, kicking off the spring with a 7-3 start, including a stretch of six wins in seven matches.
