Football Holds Emporia State Scoreless

Defense completes first shut out since 2014

ST. JOSEPH – The Griffon defense stepped up and shut out and opponent for the first time since 2014, blanking Emporia State (2-6) 28-0 on Saturday. The win gave the Griffons (6-2) their fifth straight win and equaled the regular season win total from last year with three games left in the season.

Emporia State got into the red zone twice in the game, but the Griffons kept them off the board both times. The Griffon defense turned ESU over on downs early in the third quarter at the Griffon 6-yard line. Emporia State got to the Griffon 15 on its final drive, but the scoring threat was stopped when Drew Sachen intercepted a pass with 49 seconds remaining.

The defense forced two turnovers and the Griffons got another on special teams. Missouri Western also recorded three sacks in the game, coming one short of the team's season-high four against Central Missouri. Emporia State's 340 yards of offense were the fewest allowed by MWSU this season.

NOTABLES
  • The 6-2 start and five-straight wins are the most for the program since opening the 2013 season 7-0.
  • Missouri Western matched its regular season win total from last season with three games remaining this season.
  • With Fort Hays State's win over Nebraska-Kearney, Saturday, and Pittsburg State's loss to Central Missouri, the Griffons ended the day tied for third in the MIAA standings with Fort Hays State.
  • Wyatt Steigerwald threw three more touchdowns without an interception to give him 23 TDs to just three picks and none since week four at Northeastern State, a string of 107 attempts without an interception.
  • Anthony Williams led the team with 15 tackles and also had a sack.
  • As they have all season, the scoring was spread around. All four touchdowns came from different Griffons with one on the ground (Deron Thompson) and three through the air (Cam Grandy, Luke Vang and Cooper Burton).
  • Burton led the team with three catches for 48 yards and also recovered a muffed punt that set up the drive when he caught a 14-yard touchdown catch.
  • The Griffon offense was limited to 350 yards of offense, its lowest total since 349 in week one against Northwest Missouri.
