Women’s Basketball Takes on Northwest Missouri on Saturday

Griffons host rival Bearcats on Saturday night.

THIS WEEK IN GRIFFON WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Saturday, Jan. 19, 5:30 p.m. vs. Northwest Missouri (6-9, 2-4 MIAA)

ST. JOSEPH – Missouri Western Women's Basketball (8-7, 3-3 MIAA) will host Northwest Missouri in its only game this week. The Griffons will look to make it two-straight wins after Melia Richardson's game-winner in the final seconds against Emporia State on Sunday.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
  • The Griffons have had recent success in creating turnovers, winning the turnover battle in seven of their last eight games. On the other hand, the Bearcats average only 13 turnovers per game, second in the MIAA.
  • Brittany Atkins has seen her role steadily increase since returning to the hardwood. Atkins has started the last three games, averaging 16 points per game during that stretch.
  • A win on Saturday would give the Griffons their fourth conference win, which would tie their total from last season.
  • The Griffons have had the upper hand in recent matchups with Northwest Missouri, having won eight of the last 10 games against the Bearcats.

MISSOURI WESTERN NOTES
  • Point guard Melia Richardson leads all MIAA players with a 2.4 assist-to-turnover ratio.
  • The Griffons have played the majority of their games at home, going 5-4 in the MWSU Fieldhouse.
  • Katrina Roenfeldt leads the Griffons with 15.5 points per game. Roenfeldt is one of the top three-point shooters in the conference, averaging three made three pointers per game.
  • Jessica Davies is the most efficient scorer on the team, shooting 51 percent from the field.

SCOUTING THE BEARCATS
  • Jaelyn Haggard is the team's leading scorer at over 13 points per game. Haggard was named MIAA Freshman of the Year last season.
  • Northwest Missouri is the top free-throw shooting team in the MIAA at 80 percent.
  • The Bearcats have struggled to score lately, averaging just 48 points per game during their last three games.
  • Austin Meyer is coaching in his first season as the Bearcats' head coach. Meyer had spent the previous 10 years as an assistant coach for the Northwest Missouri men's team.
