ST. JOSEPH - The 2017-18 season continues for the Griffon women's basketball team Monday night when the team travels to Kearney, Nebraska for the first round of the MIAA Championships.
The 12th-seeded Griffons take on 5th-seeded Nebraska Kearney in a rematch from a 55-49 win for the Lopers on Jan. 20. Missouri Western led for more than 32 minutes in that game, despite playing just five players. This time a trip to Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City is on the line as the winner will advance to play 4th-seeded Central Oklahoma in the championship quarterfinals on March 1.
Missouri Western earned the final qualifying spot in the postseason tournament by virtue of a tie-breaking win over Central Oklahoma on Nov. 30. That win gave the Griffons the edge over Northwest Missouri for the 12-seed. Nebraska Kearney finished the regular season tied with Central Oklahoma for fourth place in the MIAA but dropped to the 5-seed after being swept in the regular season series with UCO. The Lopers' 13-6 conference record was their best-ever in the MIAA and the 21 wins are the most for the program since the 2008-09 season.
