ST. JOSEPH – It hasn't been easy, but it's a seven game win streak for Griffon Softball (35-15, 15-9) after the team swept Washburn (23-30, 10-14) Friday night.
Â
Missouri Western took game one 5-3 before getting another clutch hit from
Megan Korgie in game two for a 3-1 victory.
Â
CLUTCH AGAIN
Korgie delivered for the second time this week with a single to right that drove in two runs to break a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the sixth. Korgie tied game two against Lincoln, Monday, with a pinch-hit double before scoring the go-ahead run of a 3-2 win. The senior's bloop on Friday was her one hit in three at bats.
Â
IN GOOD POSITION
The two wins Friday, left the Griffons all alone in fifth place in the MIAA standings. Missouri Western entered the night in a three-way tie for fifth with Central Missouri and Emporia State. UCM did not play Friday night and Emporia State split a doubleheader at Northwest Missouri State. Mathematically, the Griffons still need one more win to clinch a spot in the MIAA tournament, but Friday's results leave MWSU in a good position to make the field.
Â
MORE HOMERS
The Griffons hit three more home runs Friday.
Sydney Washington and Ryley Wilson hit solo shots in game one before
Morgan Rathmann led off game two with a home run to right. The team has now hit 15 home runs in its last 12 games.
Â
KEEPING THEM CLOSE
Missouri Western has won its last four games by six runs, combined. The Griffons' last 10 wins have come by an average of 2.1 runs per game.
Â
PITCHERS GETTING IT DONE
Kenzie Hilzer and
Barbara Billingsley combined for a 1.00 ERA, allowing just seven hits combined and four runs, two earned. They limited Washburn to a .140 average on the day. Over the seven-game win streak, the pitching duo has a 1.04 ERA with 35 hits allowed in 47 innings. Hilzer has a 0.64 ERA in her last three starts – four appearances. Billingsley has a 1.40 and is 4-0 in her last four starts.
Â
