Hilzer Out Duels Southwest Baptist; Griffons Split Doubleheader

Freshman picks up second straight shutout

ST. JOSEPH – It was a day for pitchers at the Griffon Softball Field.
 
Missouri Western (26-8, 6-2) took one game and Southwest Baptist (24-10, 8-3) got another of a softball doubleheader that saw just 15 combined hits between the two teams.
 
NOTABLES
  • Missouri Western had five hits in the doubleheader, just two in its 1-0 win in game two
  • The Griffons have combined for just three hits and two runs in their last two wins
  • Griffon pitchers limited Southwest Baptist to 10 hits on the day
  • Rebekah Mueller broke an MWSU career record when she threw out the 32nd base stealer of her career in game one
  • Kenzie Hilzer pitched her second straight shutout in game two
 
TOP PERFORMERS
  • Hilzer's (12-3) shutout in game two was the second of the season for the freshman and her 11th complete game of the season. She allowed four hits and walked one batter without a strikeout in the victory.
  • Sydney Washington went 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in both Griffon runs. Washington also drew a walk and was hit by a pitch
  • Shelbie Atwell was 2-for-6 at the plate with a run scored
  • Barbara Billingsley allowed six SBU hits and just two runs with four strikeouts and three walks in a game one loss
 
UP NEXT
The schedule has changed, but the importance has not as Northwest Missouri (17-11, 8-2) will visit St. Joseph on Tuesday as the first place team in the MIAA. Northwest swept Central Missouri on Saturday in Maryville to set up a showdown for first at the Spring Sports Complex next week.
