Griffons Fall in Delayed Game at Central Oklahoma

Missouri Western loses second straight

EDMOND, Okla. – The Missouri Western football team lost its second game in a row, 31-21 at Central Oklahoma in a game that took nearly four and a half hours after a 90 minute weather delay.

Central Oklahoma jumped out to a 14-0 lead and never let Missouri Western take the advantage on the scoreboard. The Griffons tied the game at 14 and trailed 24-21 in the third quarter when the weather delay hit. Lightning in the area forced the teams into the locker rooms and the fans out of the stands for an hour and a half.

After the delay, Central Oklahoma shut out the Griffons and added seven points themselves to drop the Griffons to 2-2 and hand Missouri Western its second-straight loss at Wantland Stadium.

Missouri Western outgained Central Oklahoma, 480-442, but were -2 in turnovers. For the first time this season, the Griffons were outrushed, but only by three yards (178-175). Special teams again hurt Missouri Western, averaging just 24 per yards on three punts; with no punt returns and just an 11.8 yard average on five kickoff returns. Sean Galey missed a 27-yard field goal attempt, his only attempt of the game, in the fourth quarter that would have pulled the Griffons within seven with more than 10 minutes to go. Griffon kickers are now 3-9 on the season on field goal attempts.

Skyler Windmiller was 21-42 through the air for 305 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. The junior quarterback was sacked three times by a UCO defense that had not sacked a quarterback through its first three games. Josh Caldwell carried the ball 17 times for 122 yards and a touchdown, averaging 7.2 yards per carry. Brock Broughton led the receiving corps with four catches for 77 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown catch from Windmiller in the second quarter. Donte Watkins once again had 10 tackles for the Griffons, his fourth 10-tackle performance in as many games.

Missouri Western returns to Craig Field at Spratt Memorial Stadium to host 1-3 Northeastern State next Saturday at 1 p.m. The 2016 Missouri Western Hall of Fame class will receive its rings at halftime. This year's class includes former Griffon Football players Michael Cobbins, George Hayward and Eric McDowell.
