Griffons pick up road win, drop neutral site game

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Griffon Baseball spit a pair of games on its second day at the Henderson State Invitational. Missouri Western took down Ouachita Baptist in 10 innings to begin the day before falling to Arkansas Tech in the team's only neutral site game of the event.

Game 1: MWSU 8, Ouachita Baptist 7 (10 innings)
After letting a lead slip away in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings, the Griffon offense came back to life in the 10th for an 8-7 win at Ouachita Baptist.

After putting the first two men on in the top of the 10th, Landon Mason and Orencio Fisher followed with fly balls that left the runners in place. David Glaude and Cosimo Cannella were hit by pitches in consecutive at bats, Cannella's driving in what would prove to be the winning run.

Up 7-4 heading to the bottom of the ninth, the Griffons gave up three two-out runs to force extra baseball. Richard Peoples gave up back-to-back walks after retiring the first two batters in the frame, then gave up two straight singles that left the winning run at third base. Peoples coaxed a ground ball, fielder's choice to end regulation. Peoples walked Ouachita Baptist's leadoff hitter in the bottom of the 10th but retired the next three, striking out the final batter of the game and earning the victory.

Conner Schwienebart was left with a no decision after going the first 5.1 innings. He allowed four runs, all earned, on 10 hits, while striking out five and walking two. David Anderson walked the only batter he faced in the sixth before Peoples entered. Peoples moved to 2-1 on the season, giving up three earned runs on two hits, five walks and four strikeouts. Fisher went 2-5, both hits for extra bases with a double and a triple. Cannella drove in two and went 1-4. Mason finished 2-5 with two runs scored and Jeremy Alvarado was 2-5.

Game 2: Arkansas Tech 14, MWSU 2
A pair of big innings by Arkansas Tech kept Missouri Western from a chance to split the season series with the Wonder Boys. Arkansas Tech scored five in the fifth and 6 in the seventh to cut the game short due to run-rule.

The Griffons were down 3-0 heading to the fifth when the complexion of the game changed in a big way. The inning started with an error charged to Landon Mason. Chris Estrada was able to retire the next two batters, one on a sacrifice fly, but then put the next five batters on base, the last a three-RBI double. Arkansas Tech scored its runs in the seventh off a number of walks, as well.

All told, Griffon pitchers walked seven batters and hit three. All three hit batters came with Alex Clavet on the mound. Clavet took the loss, going 3.1 innings, giving three runs, one earned, on four hits, a walk and two strikeouts. The Griffons were also charged with five errors in the field and managed just four hits.

The loss dropped Missouri Western to 3-3 on the year with a rematch coming on Sunday at Ouachita Baptist.
