ST. JOSEPH - Griffon Football plays its final home game of the 2016 season this Saturday when the team hosts No. 9-ranked Emporia State. It will be senior day at Spratt Memorial Stadium as seven members of the team and two student assistant coaches will be recognized before the game.
Missouri Western is coming off a heartbreaking 16-13 loss last week at Washburn. The Griffons had a second and goal pass intercepted in the end zone with less than 30 seconds remaining to end the game. Emporia State has won its last eight games, including a 24-16 win over Fort Hays State last Saturday.
THANK YOU SENIORS
Before Saturday's game, the Missouri Western football team and Griffon Athletics will recognize nine seniors.
Members of the class have been a part of Griffon teams that have combined for 46 wins and 19 losses. Anderson, Belcher, Capul, Vandenberg and Wischmann were also a part of the 2012 MIAA Championship team that advanced to the NCAA DII quarterfinals.
STREAKS TO SNAP
Griffon Football enters Saturday trying to avoid stretching two three-game losing streaks to four games.
Missouri Western has dropped its last three games, something that has happened just seven times in the last 20 seasons. Four-game losing streaks have been even more rare in the
Jerry Partridge era. Missouri Western has lost four-straight just three times in the previous 19 seasons, last happening in 2008.
The Griffons have also lost three in a row to Emporia State for the first time since the 2002-04 seasons. Emporia State has won four in a row in the series, once, but not in consecutive seasons. The Hornets last four-game win streak in the series came between 1986 and 1991 with a three-year hiatus from 1988-90.
The Griffons lead the all-time series 24-14 and have win streaks of 10 (1976-85) and eight (2005-12) in the series.
PARTRIDGE ONE FROM 150
Jerry Partridge looks for his 150th career victory for the fourth consecutive week.
The 20th year head coach is 12-7 against Washburn, the third most victories against any current MIAA member for Partridge who has 14 wins over Missouri Southern and 13 over Central Missouri.
The former Griffon defensive back leads active MIAA coaches in career victories and is third all-time among MIAA coaches.
RIVALRY ON THE ROAD NEXT WEEK
Missouri Western will close the 2016 regular season next Saturday at No. 1 Northwest Missouri State. The game is scheduled to kick off at 1:30 p.m. in Maryville.
