Defense Helps Griffon Women to Win Over William Jewell

Griffs hold Cardinals to 32 percent field goal shooting

ST. JOSEPH - At times it wasn't pretty, but the Missouri Western women's basketball team (6-1) picked up its fourth straight win, defeating William Jewell 61-45 to close out the Holiday Inn Express/Candlewood Suites Classic on Saturday evening.

The Griffons were held well below their season scoring average (75.3 points) coming into the game, but held William Jewell to just 45 points. The two teams were tied after the first quarter, but the Griffons took a four-point lead to halftime. Missouri Western shot just 36.8 percent from the field (21-57) and only 13.3 percent from three-point range (2-15). The Griffons out-rebounded William Jewell by seven and continued their streak of forcing high turnover numbers in picking up 25 with 17 steals.

Dwanisha Tate finished with a game-high 17 points. Chelsea Dewey added 14 with three assists and Julia Torres had her first double-double of the season, scoring 12 points with 10 rebounds.

Missouri Western jumps into MIAA play next week when the team travels to Northeastern State on Nov. 30.
