Box Score ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – For the third straight game,  the Missouri Western Women's Basketball team had a chance in the closing seconds, but for the fourth-straight game, the team came out on the losing end. This one really stung, with a chance to defeat a No. 1 team for the first time in program history and it was the closest the Griffons have been in the last three, coming within a point of top-ranked Emporia State, 57-56.Â
Despite the Griffons starting the second half 0-14, they managed to pull within one of the Lady Hornets with 1.2 seconds left in the game after
Sarafina Handy hit a contested three-pointer. MWSU trailed by 14 with five minutes remaining, then outscored Emporia State 16-7 over the final five minutes. It was too little too late though as Emporia State successfully inbounded the ball and let the clock run out.Â
The Griffons were led by
LaQuinta Jefferson's 19 points with Handy chipping in 11. The Griffons shot 31 percent from the field for the game, shooting 35 percent in the first half and 28 percent in the second half.Â
The Griffons stay in the fieldhouse and in the top-5 with No. 5 Pittsburg State visiting on Saturday.Â
