A tough opening week of MIAA play continues this weekend for Griffon Volleyball with Emporia State and Washburn headed to the MWSU Fieldhouse. 

MWSU dropped its home opener Tuesday night in three close sets to No. 14 Central Missouri. The Jennies overcame deficits in the first and third sets to claim the 3-0 win. 

Jessie Thorup has adjusted well to her move outside, leading the team with 119 kills. Her .317 attack percentage trails only Amanda Boender (.378) among the Griffons top hitters. Erica Rottinghaus is second wiht 117 kills and Boender has added 82. 

Jordan Chohon is averaging 11.5 assists per set and leads the team with 391 assists and a .600 set percentage. 

Boender leads the squad with 27 total blocks. Not far behind is Lindsey Partridge with 24. 

RECORD WATCH
Sarah Faubel's 131 digs this season leads the Griffons. More importantly, her 1,503 career digs leaves her just 62 shy of the career mark set by Sarah Ekdahl from 1997-2000.

UP NEXT
It doesn't get any easier this weekend with 4-2 Emporia State and 9-0, No. 5 Washburn coming to the MWSU Fieldhouse. 

Washburn swept the Hornets in straight sets (25-18; 27-25; 25-20) Tuesday night in Topeka, Kansas. 

The Hornets are led by Carly Spicer and her 98 kills. Josie Williams is second in that category with 61 kills. Kimberly Bell leads the Hornets with 152 assists. Sydney Hartman is second on the squad with 93. 

As a team, the Hornets are hitting .182 and holding opponents to a .173 attack percentage. 

Kelly Holden's 99 digs top a roster that has spread its defense around. Three players are averaging more than three digs per set, including Holden, Spicer and Williams. 

The Griffons hold a 40-36 all-time over the Hornets. 

The Ichabods have had little trouble earning their 9-0 record. Washburn has dropped just one set all season. 

Marissa Cox's 107 kills are tops on the team. She is averaging 3.96 per set and hitting .354. Natalie Bates has 183 assists and Liz Powell has chipped in 139. Alyssa Carney's 139 digs are the most by any Ichabod this season. 

MWSU leads the all-time series against Washburn 40-30.
