PITTSBURG, Kan. --
Erica Rottinghaus continued her impressive weekend at the Pittsburg State Tournament as Missouri Western defeated Pittsburg State 3-0 Saturday evening in the final match of the two-day invite.
Rottinghaus led the team with 15 kills and 18 digs as the Griffons won their second game of the season. The Griffons won the match 25-18, 25-21 and 25-18.
Pittsburg State jumped out to an early lead, taking a 12-9 advantage in the first portion of the set. The Griffons remained calm and ran up six straight points to lead 15-12 afterward. A total team effort produced 10 more points as the Griffons won 25-18.
The second set was the closest. Neither team had much breathing room until the Griffons scored six straight points in the middle of the set to break a 12-12 tie and lead 18-12. Freshman
Kelsey Olion provided the final point of the match with a kill to take it 25-21.
The third set was won by the Griffons 25-18. Rottinghaus put together a streak of kills at the beginning to coincide with four Gorilla errors. Missouri Western never trailed in the set as it cruised to the 3-0 win to go 2-2 this weekend. The win was a nonconference match against the Gorillas.
Stephanie Hattey (21 assists) and Jordon Chohon (17) split setting duties throughout the evening. The Griffons return to action next weekend in the NSIC Challenge where the Griffons will face St. Cloud State in the opener followed by matches with Minot State, Sioux Falls and Augustana College.
