WARM UPS...
The Griffons continue road play this weekend as they head up to Sioux Fall, S.D. to play in the NSIC Challenge. The Griffons wills go up against regional opponents St. Cloud State and Minot State on Friday before taking on the host Sioux Falls Saturday afternoon then playing Augustana College in the final game of the weekend. The four-game tournament will be important for Missouri Western as all four teams are in the NCAA Central Region.

Return to South Dakota:
Last year the Griffons went up north for their opening-weekend tournament and did fantastic. The Griffons went a perfect 4-0 at the Northern State/Dacotah Bank Classica in Aberdeen, S.D and hope to do the same this weekend. The Griffons defeated Minot State, Chadron State College, Northern State and Black Hills while playing in South Dakota last season.

Early Records:
The Griffons have had a winning record in 25 of their past 34 years in volleyball after through September 30. The Griffons were 9-7 after September in 2012, including a quick 5-0 start to the year.

Under Coach Carbin in September:
Since Carbin's arrival as the assistant coach in 2009, the Griffons are 27-29 in the month of September. Last year, the Griffons began the season on August 31, and won both matches.

Last Weekend's Split:
The Griffons went 2-2 last weekend in their season openers. The Griffons dropped a first-match game against Rockhurst 3-0 but turned things around nicely to defeat Quincy 3-1. The Griffons then split again, losing 3-1 to Ouachita Baptist before sweeping Pittsburg State 3-0.

A New Offensive Weapon:
Erica Rottinghaus started her Missouri Western career out last weekend and helped the Griffons' offense out. Rottinghaus started all four matches and had 47 kills to lead the team with 56 digs to counter her offensive attack. Rottinghaus should continue to complement sophomore outside hitter Jessie Thorup nicely.

Tough Stretch:
When the season starts the Griffons will play 12 of their first 13 matches on the road. Their first home match will be on Thursday, Sept. 24 when they take on Fort Hays State. After that, the Griffons go back on the road for nine of their next 12 matches. But they will finish with seven consecutive home matches to end the year.

Carbin's First Weekend:
Marian Carbin, former Missouri Western volleyball standout and assistant head coach for the past four seasons, opened up her professional head coaching debut winning two matches. Out of the Griffons' past four head coaches, only Kyp Harasymowycz did better, eclipsing a 4-0 mark on to a 7-0 record to start the season in 2006. That team finished 16-15.

UP NEXT...
The Griffons play their first conference match starting next week. MWSU heads up to Maryville to take on Northwest Missouri State at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17. After that, the Griffons will head to Kansas to play Emporia State on the road for a 3 p.m. match on Saturday, Sept. 21. Then next Tuesday the Griffons are set for their first home match when they play Fort Hays State at 7 p.m.
