KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Despite a slow start the Missouri Western volleyball put a fight in Kirksville, Mo. Unfortunately the Griffons could not make the plays when needed falling 3-1 (25-14, 26-24, 23-25, 26-24) in MIAA action. The Griffons fall to 8-7 overall and 2-4 in MIAA action.

The Griffons started slow getting down 12-5 early in set one. MWSU cut the lead to 14-10 after a Torey Lyman kill but the Bulldogs finished on a 11-4 run taking set one 25-14.

In set two the Griffons got down 11-7 after a Lyman attack error but a 7-2 run helped them take their first lead of the match at 14-13 after a Kelly Scannell service ace. The set would be close the rest of the way and things looked good for MWSU when they took a 23-21 lead. Truman hung in there winning five of the final six point taking the set 26-24.

Coming out of the break being down 2-0 the Griffons came out and showed some determination pushing to a 20-14 lead after a kill by Amanda Boender. The Bulldogs made things interesting down the stretch but Meredith McCormick was able to get the final point giving the Griffons the set 25-23.

After getting down early in set four 6-2 the Griffons showed some poise going on a 10-5 run claiming the lead at 12-11 after a Truman service error. Things looked good for the Griffons late in the set getting up 24-20 after a 6-0 run, but the Bulldogs answered with their own 6-0 run claiming set four 26-24 and the match 3-1.

Sarah Faubel had 12 kills and 12 digs while Stephanie Hattey and Jessie Thorup both had 10 kills. Jordan Chohon had 23 set assists while Brooke Cousino had 17 digs.

The Bulldogs improve to 11-4 overall and 4-2 in MIAA play. Allie Brak led the offensive charge with 19 kills while Meghan Zimmerman had 50 set assists and 12 digs.

MWSU returns to action tomorrow (Sept. 29) afternoon with a 1:00 pm contest against Southwest Baptist in St. Joseph, Mo.
