ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Missouri Western volleyball team picked up a big victory over the Lindenwood Lions on Saturday afternoon in the fieldhouse. After falling in set one the Griffons won three straight sets picking up a 3-1 (19-25, 26-24, 25-17, 25-14) MIAA victory. The Griffons improve to 8-5 overall and 2-3 in MIAA play.
The Griffons and the Lions played a close first set with MWSU going up 10-7 after a
Meredith McCormick kill. The Lioins responded tying the score at 11. The two teams played to a 17 all tie but the rest of set belonged to Lindenwood closing on a 8-2 run winning 25-19. The Griffons hit .159 in the set with McCormick leading the way with four kills.
Stephanie Hattey had seven set assists and five digs. The Lions hit .282 with Kayla Guyot and Nicole Hallum both getting five kills.
In set two the Griffons led most of the set and claimed a 20-14 lead late in the set. The Lions made things interesting coming back taking a 24-23 lead. The Griffons remained calm closing on a 3-0 run tying the match at one.
Amanda Boender had three kills while
Sarah Faubel had nine digs in the set. Kelsey Kennedy had eight kills for the Lions while Allison Waldvogel had 11 digs and Emma Brydels had 10 assists.
The Griffons came out in sets three and four and dominated play running away with 25-17 and 25-14 set victories. MWSU had 45 kills in the match with Boender leading the way hitting .278 with nine kills in 18 attempts. McCormick had eight kills while Hattey and
Jessie Thorup had seven. Hattey had 22 set assists and 10 digs while Chohon had 16 set assists and Faubel had 19 digs.
The Lions fall to 6-7 overall and 1-4 in MIAA play. The Lions finished with 49 kills with Kelsey Kennedy leading the way with 15 kills. The Lions had 81 digs with Kaila Schrimpf leading the way with 17 digs while Emma Brydels had 39 of Lindenwood's 46 set assists.
The Griffons return to action on Tuesday, September 25 when they step out of MIAA action to take on the Rockhurst University Hawks in Kansas City, Mo. Game time is set for 7:00 pm.
