ST. JOSEPH, Mo. - The Missouri Western volleyball team picked up its fist MIAA victory of the season defeating the Missouri Southern Lions 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 25-20) in the MWSU Fieldhouse. Kelly Scannell had a double double with 16 set assists and 10 digs. The Griffons improve to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in MIAA play.

With the score tied at 19 the Griffons used a 6-0 run closing out set one with a 25-19 victory. MWSU had 13 kills hitting .267 in the set. Melissa Cairns and Holly Pollock each had three kills in the set whil Kelly Scannell had six set assists. The Lions hit just .067 with eight kills  as Sydney Potts had seven set assists.

In set two the Griffons went on a 13-2 run midway through the match claiming a 20-9 lead after an attack error by the Lions. In set two the Griffons hit just .059 but MWSU forced the Lions into hitting -.053 taking the set 25-15. Jessie Thorup had three kills hitting .222 in the set while Sarah Faubel had six digs.

In set three the Griffons had 15 kills with Stephanie Hattey and Melissa Cairns each getting four. MWSU won set three 25-20 picking up the 3-0 victory.

In the match the Griffons hit .165 with 38 kills. Hattey and Cairns both had eight kills while Hattey had 17 of the Griffons 35 set assits. Defensively Sarah Faubel had 19 of the Griffons 51 digs.

The Lions were led by Nai Montano with six kills while Sydney Potts had 21 set asstist. Missouri Southern falls to 0-9 overall and 0-1 in MIAA play.

The Griffons return to action on Saturday, September 15 when they take on the Emporia State Hornets at 12:00 pm in the MWSU Fieldhouse.
