Missouri Western volleyball split four games this past weekend at the Middle of Everywhere Classic in Rolla, Mo., and now tests the MIAA this week with three MIAA matches. All the matches this week will be at the MWSU Fieldhouse.
The Griffons start the week at 7 p.m. Tuesday night, playing rival Northwest Missouri State. On Friday the Griffons will take the court against Missouri Southern at 7 p.m. before wrapping up the week's slate against Emporia State on Saturday at noon.
Junior
Stephanie Hattey received MIAA Specialist of the Week honors with her performance at the Middle of Everywhere Classic. She currently leads the team in assists with 172, followed by freshman
Jordan Chohon, who has 104.
The Griffons have spread the ball around well, accumulating 363 kills as a team with outside hitter
Sarah Faubel leading the charge with 68. Hattey follows her with 57.
Meredith McCormick,
Amanda Boender and
Jessie Thorup all have over 50 kills as well.
Holly Pollock leads the team with 94 digs and Boender has tallied a team-high 28 blocks.
MWSU currently sits at 6-2 on the season, winning three of its matches by scores of 3-1 and sweeping its other three. The Griffons haven't won a set in any losses yet this season.
About Northwest Missouri: The Bearcats sit at 4-4 on the year. The Griffons lead the series 56-27. The Griffons will watch out for senior Tori Beckman, who leads NWMSU with 154 digs already on the young season. Northwest Missouri is led by interim head coach Amy Phelps, who stepped in during the summer after Jessica Rinehart stepped down.
About Missouri Southern: The Lions have yet to win a match this season sitting at 0-7. The Griffons hold a 51-28 all-time record against the Lions. Katie Politte leads the Lions to the MWSU Fieldhouse with a team-high 89 kills. Another player to lookout for is setter Abby Finder, who has recorded 224 assists already this year.
About Emporia State: The Hornets are 5-3 coming into MIAA play, and they will match up with Washburn before their Saturday match against the Griffons. MWSU holds a slim, 39-34 record against ESU. Sophomore Katie Deutschmann is a versatile player, knotting 62 kills along with 145 assists for her team.
Up Next: The Griffons continue their home slate of MIAA play next week, matching up against Central Missouri at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21 before a 1 p.m. match on Saturday against Lindenwood.
