ABERDEEN, S.D. -- Missouri Western Volleyball started its season out with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-23) sweep against Minot State University in the Northern State / Dacotah Bank Classic.

Junior transfer from Southeastern Oklahoma State Erin Backhuus led the way in her first match as a Griffon. Backhuus recorded 10 kills leading the Griffons throughout the sweep.

Stephanie Hattey continued to play a huge role as she starts her junior campaign with MWSU. Hattey recorded 19 assists and 11 digs.

Minot State tied MWSU at 6 during the first set before the Griffons rallied off five straight points taking an 11-6 advantage. The Griffons never looked back and secured the set 25-13.

The next two sets followed as the Griffons led for most of the way and took the game with Meredith McCormick's final kill giving the Griffons a victory in a season opener for the third straight season.

Up Next: MWSU will wrap up day one of the classic aginast the Chadron State College Eagles at 4:30 pm. The Griffons defeated the Eagles last season in straight sets (25-17, 25-23, 25-23) in Kearney, Neb. on September 9, 2011.
