Setting the scene:
The Griffons opened the season with a 91-68 loss to Quincy and sit at 0-1 headed into the weekend. Western will battle two NCAA Division II foes in Colorado School of Mines and Colorado Christian University in Golden Colo.
The Orediggers and Cougars both sit at 0-2 after both lost to Wayne State (Neb.) and Northern State last week in Wayne, Neb. The Orediggers are coming off a 7-20 campaign in 2010-11; finishing 3-19 in the RMAC. The Cougars made their first ever NCAA Division II Tournament appearance after posting an 18-10 regular season record. Colorado Christian fell in the first round of the regional, 78-73 to Wayne State.
Busy Weekend:
While the Griffon women are busy in the Rockies, the Griffon men and Griffon football will be busy in St. Joseph.
The men host the 20th annual Hillyard Tipoff Classic at the MWSU Fieldhouse. The Griffons will play William Jewell on Friday and Rockhurst on Saturday.
Griffon football hosts its first ever NCAA Division II Playoff game Saturday at Spratt Stadium. Western is making its second consecutive playoff appearance, and for the second straight year, faces Northwest Missouri in the playoffs. Western was 0-2 against the Bearcats last season, but downed Northwest, 31-28 on Nov. 5 this season.
