WESTERN VOLLEYBALL FALLS 3-1 AGAINST FORT HAYS STATE

Box Score HAYS, Kan. After taking set one on the road against the Fort Hays State Tigers the Griffons lost three straight falling 3-1 (17-25, 25-16, 25-22, 25-17) in a pivotal MIAA match-up. Western had just 43 kills in the match with Shelby Corkill leading the way with 14. Western falls to 9-11 on the season and 2-5 in MIAA play.

Western got off on the right foot on the road winning set one 25-17. Western was sparked by freshman Corkill and Amanda Boender as they both had four kills in the set. Western closed the set on a 15-7 run to get the victory.

Set two looked to be in favor of Western as they took an early 10-6 lead. The Tigers regained focus outscoring Western 19-6 the rest of the way evening the match at one set apiece after taking set two 25-16.

Set three was a back and forth battle with neither team leading by more than two points until the final point of the set. The Griffons took a 22-21lead in the set after Corkill?s 12th kill of the match. The Tigers used three kills and a service ace by Tracie Hileman closing set three on a 4-0 run taking the set 25-22. More importantly for the Tigers they took a 2-1 lead in the best of five.

The Griffons struggle in the start of set four getting down 9-2. Their only two points in that stretch came from Corkill and Boender. Western closed the game to 9-7 going on a 5-0 run sparked by the serving of Torey Lyman. The Tigers used five kills with two by Kylee Hoagland capturing a six point lead at 15-9 midway through set four. The Tigers finished winning ten of the final 18 points taking set three 25-17 and the match 3-1. The Tigers had 16 kills hitting .355 in the final set.

Western had 42 set assists with Stephanie Hattey leading the way with 35 while Sarah Faubel finished with 22 of the Griffons 71 digs. Senior Tahler Johnston struggled with just three kills hitting -.250. Alex Behnke finished with 12 kills for Western.

The Tigers snapped a three match losing streak against the Griffons as they improve to 13-9 overall and 2-6 in MIAA play. Jenna Ulrich had 19 of the Tigers 57 kills while Kayla Zoglman had 40 set assists. Hileman finished with 26 of FHSU?s 77 digs.

Western hits the road for a match-up with the Missouri Southern State University Lions on Tuesday, October 18 in Joplin, Mo. First serve is set for 7:00 pm in Robert Ellis Young Gymnasium.
