Career Record and Record at MWSU: 133-89 (80-50 MIAA)
2017 MIAA Coach of the Year
Marian Carbin enters her ninth season as the head coach of her alma mater. The 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but in her first seven seasons on the court Carbin has had just one season overall and one in the MIAA that her team finished below .500. Carbin has three 20-win seasons and four seasons in league play with double figure wins.
She was named the MIAA Coach of the Year in 2017 after guiding MWSU to the MIAA regular season championship and to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 17 years. Carbin's Griffons defeated Nebraska-Kearney in the opening round of the regional for the programs first-ever NCAA Tournament victory. They did fall to eventual national champion Concordia-St. Paul in the regional semifinals in four sets.
The three 20-plus win seasons came in 2014, 2015 and 2017, which was the best stretch for Griffon volleyball in nearly 20 years.
Prior to that, Carbin guided Missouri Western to a 16-15 mark in her first season and a 9-7 record in the MIAA, and that was the first time since 2006 MWSU finished above .500 overall and the first time since 2000 the team was above .500 in the MIAA.
INDIVIDUAL SUCCESS
Carbin has had 39 Griffons earn All-MIAA honors, including 10 All-MIAA First Team members. The program not had had a First Team All-MIAA player since 2002. Erica Rottinghaus, Jessie Thorup and Jordan Chohon each earned First Team honors twice under Carbin and current Griffon Ali Tauchen earned that distinction in 2019.
Rottinghaus was also named honorable mention AVCA All-American in 2014 along with being a first team AVCA All-District pick. Tauchen was named 2017 MIAA Freshman of the Year in 2017 to become the first Griffon to win that honor in seven years.
Carbin has coached the program’s top two leaders in all-time digs (Sarah Faubel and Kayla Ruff) and the program’s all-time leader in kills (Jessie Thorup).
ACADEMIC SUCCESS
Carbin's student-athletes have shown excellence in the classroom as well. Rottinghaus and Faubel were named first team COSIDA/Capital One Academic All-Americans and first team COSIDA/Capital One Academic All-District in 2014. They were the first Griffons to be named Academic All-America since Carbin in 2005. Tauchen also earned CoSIDA First Team Academic All-America honors in 2021
Nearly 100 Griffons have earned MIAA Academic Honor Roll honors and nearly 30 have received the MIAA Scholar-Athlete award for achieving at least a 3.5 GPA and All-MIAA status. Five others have received the MIAA Academic Excellence Award under Carbin for achieving a cumulative GPA of 4.0.
COACHING EXPERIENCE
Before being named the head coach of her alma mater, Carbin spent four seasons as an assistant at Missouri Western under Cory Frederick. Carbin helped the program improve on wins every season, winning 11 in 2009; 12 in 2010; 14 in 2011 and 16 in 2012. In 2010, Carbin helped coach MIAA Freshman of the Year and Honorable Mention All-MIAA selection Stephanie Hattey.
Carbin also was an assistant coach at North Kansas City High School where she also taught mathematics. She was head coach of the Kansas City Extreme Volleyball Club, which competed in the 2009 Junior Olympics National Tournament.
FOREVER A GRIFFON
Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Carbin was a standout on the Griffon Volleyball team. The 2004-05 Missouri Western Volleyball Student-Athlete of the Year, the former Marian Broderick, was a four-year letter winner. She played in 393 games and 116 matches in four years. She accumulated 557 kills to go along with 1,009 digs, 135 set assists and 128 services aces. She was also named to the 2005 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America team.
Carbin graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Missouri Western in 2007. She and her husband, Greg, are both Missouri Western alums and reside in Kansas City with their twin son and daughter.
